The Northeast Fisheries Science Center is informing stakeholders of the 2019 schedule for groundfish stock assessments. During these assessments, scientists will use existing models and data sources to evaluate stock health. Data comes from research surveys, recreational and commercial fishermen, commercial dealers, and commercial fisheries observers.

The assessments involve a several-step process that begins with a panel that reviews the scientific information and plan for each assessment. Once these are accepted, the assessments begin and, upon completion, are reviewed by an independent panel of experts.

On Thursday, June 20, 2019, the process begins for the groundfish complex. At this meeting, assessment plans will be reviewed for 14 stocks. After this meeting, scientists will spend the summer conducting the assessments. The assessment peer review meeting will be held September 9-11, 2019.
