2021 Atlantic Cod Stock Structure Workshops

The Atlantic Cod Stock Structure Working Group (ACSSWG) concluded in a 2020 report that the population structure of Atlantic cod in New England waters consists of five distinct biological stocks instead of the two that are currently managed. This conclusion led to a rethinking of the current science and management approaches to the fishery.

In order to gain additional perspectives on the issues associated with a potential change in stock status, the New England Fishery Management Council and NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center, with contracted support from the University of New Hampshire and New Hampshire Sea Grant, agreed to host two sets of public workshops. One set is focused on science and assessment issues and the other is focused on management issues.
